Remember Cat Stevens, now known as Yusuf Islam? He was intercepted in the U.S. after taking a flight from London, and he will be expelled from the U.S. tomorrow. Could this have anything to do with the fact that he recently released his old hit "Peace Train" as a protest against the war in Iraq? Welcome to the new police state. The news article follows.

The Former Cat Stevens Gets Plane Diverted

By LESLIE MILLER

WASHINGTON (AP) - A plane bound for Washington from London was diverted to Maine on Tuesday after passenger Yusuf Islam - formerly known as pop singer Cat Stevens - showed up on a U.S. watch list, federal officials said.

United Airlines Flight 919 had already taken off from London en route to Dulles International Airport when the match was made between the passenger and the watch list, said Nico Melendez, a spokesman for the Transportation Security Administration.

The plane was met by federal agents at Maine's Bangor International Airport around 3 p.m., Melendez said.

Federal officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, identified the individual as Islam.

One official said Islam, 56, was identified by the Advanced Passenger Information System, which requires airlines to send passenger information to U.S. Customs and Border Protection's National Targeting Center. TSA was then contacted and requested that the plane land at the nearest airport, the official said.

``He was interviewed and denied admission to the United States on national security grounds,'' said Homeland Security spokesman Dennis Murphy. He said the man would be put on the first available flight out of the country Wednesday.

Islam, who was born Stephen Georgiou, took Cat Stevens as a stage name and had a string of hits in the 1960s and '70s, including ``Wild World'' and ``Morning Has Broken.'' Last year he released two songs, including a re-recording of his '70s hit ``Peace Train,'' to express his opposition to the U.S.-led war in Iraq.

He abandoned his music career in the late 1970s and changed his name after being persuaded by orthodox Muslim teachers that his lifestyle was forbidden by Islamic law. He later became a teacher and an advocate for his religion, founding a Muslim school in London in 1983.

Islam recently condemned the school seizure by militants in Beslan, Russia, earlier this month that left more than 300 dead, nearly half of them children.

In a statement on his Web site, he wrote, ``Crimes against innocent bystanders taken hostage in any circumstance have no foundation whatsoever in the life of Islam and the model example of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him.''

Not to mention inconveniencing a whole planeload of people who had to make an unscheduled stop in Maine. The ironic thing is that the plane was en route to Dulles airport. Where did they take Cat after taking him off of the plane? Washington! So why not just let the plane go there in the first place?

Because, fair or not, he was on the "do not fly list", and they aren't going to let any of those people come even close to Washington, DC! Which would cause more damage, blowing up Portland, Maine or blowing up DC?

He was on the "do not fly list" for a reason, right? He is an Islamic fanatic, and gee, what do those types of people advocate? The downfall of the U.S., maybe? He has never preached anti-American activities has he? Is that a bad stance, perchance, especially after 9/11/01? Has he ever, by any chance, generated money via his recordings and donated such money towards the Islamic fanatics?

I believe the answer to all of these questions, is a restounding YES!

Ah never let the facts get between you and your "beliefs":

Islamic singer Yusuf Islam, who enjoyed several pop hits under the name Cat Stevens before becoming a Muslim, has condemned the recent terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, D.C.

"I wish to express my heartfelt horror at the indiscriminate terrorist attacks committed against innocent people of the United States," Islam wrote on his official Web site.

A Universal Music spokesperson confirmed the comments were written by the singer, who drew the ire of many in the late '80s by reportedly supporting the Ayatollah Khomeini's proclamation of a death sentence for novelist Salman Rushdie.

In his statement, Islam emphasized that the terrorists' actions contradict the peaceful teachings of Islam. "No right-thinking follower of Islam could possibly condone such an action," he wrote. "The Quran equates the murder of one innocent person with the murder of the whole of humanity."

Islam said his thoughts are with the victims and their families, and he stressed that most Muslims share his views.

His comments are especially poignant considering the backlash Islam encountered when the British press reported that he supported Rushdie's death sentence, handed down by the Iranian leader because the author's novel "The Satanic Verses" allegedly blasphemed the Quran. Some classic rock stations refused to play his music and 10,000 Maniacs pulled a cover of the singer's "Peace Train" from pressings of their 1987 album, In My Tribe.

In interviews last year to promote the re-release of his catalog, Islam said he was misquoted by the English media and did not support Khomeini. The singer made headlines again in July 2000 when he was detained and deported from Israel while at an airport in Jerusalem. It was the second time he had been denied admittance to the country since 1990. Two years prior, the Israeli government had accused him of donating tens of thousands of dollars to Islamic terrorist group Hamas.

http://www.vh1.com/news/articles/1448948/09182001/islam_yusuf.jhtml

Your ignorance eill no doubt extend to focussing on the "Hamas" link alleged by the Israelis without also knowing that the name is also applied to a welfare organisation run by the umbrella group that acts rather like the Red Cross in supporting orphaned children. That is in the absence of an organised Palestinian state with such functions.

Since the allegations of supporting the military wing have not been demostrated by the Israelis and his charities have not been suspended by the British government, all they can do is make the unfounded allegations and send them to the US who dutifully accept them without investigations.

Of course he has made charitable donations from the income from his records including to that well known radical Islamic front, the September 11th Fund:

And don't you do the same! Denied entry to the U.S. after giving up his citizenship, kicked out of Israel, denies that he supported the death sentence against Rushdie by Islamic fanatics via Khomeni when Khomeni was holding Americans hostage. Covering his ass with his "donations" - doesn't fool anyone of intelligence either in the U.S., Great Britain or Israel!

Face the facts, he ISN'T welcome in the U.S., Great Britain or Israel, and he should just stay his terrorist supporting ass at home, as he will be detained if he tries to enter the U.S. Now that he attempted to do so, and has been detained as such, I hope he enjoys the view from Cuba! :7

Wrong, My cousin is on the do not fly list, he is harassed everytime he goes to the airport. He is a high ranking police officer in a big city police dept. There are many many people on the "Do not fly" list. Not many deserve to be there.

At this point, it is becoming more and more difficult to call the people in Iraq fighting US soldiers Terrorists. I think Freedom Fighters would be a more accurate description. Bush and his buddies have been robbing the Iraqi people of their only national resource, oil. At this point, you really can't blame them for being upset by the occupation. He has blown their country to bits destroyed their economy and nobody their asked for help. I wish someone would impeach him.

Not so. Bush was hiding out during all the fun and festivities that occured here in DC on 09/11/01. All that plane would have accomplished if allowed to proceed on its mission would be the deaths of several hundred Washingtonians and infrastructure damage to the White House.

I doubt that "not many" deserve to be there. I doubt that your cousin, would be there without a valid reason, ESPECIALLY if he is a high ranking police officer. They don't just pick people at random, do they?

Being a Muslim, rightly so or not, DEFINITELY puts you on at least the questionable list. That is just fact, so deal with it.

Not all Christians are fanatic, of course, but some are. No denying that fact, whether such fanaticism is espoused by the current administration, or by the Davidians. But face the facts, such Christian fanatics are few compared to the Islamic fanatics. If statement of the facts, constitutes stereotyping, then sterotyping it is!

What citizenship might that be? Despite the attempts of Blair and the grand delusions of Bush; England, where hew was born and raised, is not part of the USA yet.

Apart from his later clarification that he supported the death sentence if Rushdie was fond guilty in a country where Sharia law applied, the Fatwa was issued and his comment made in 1989. The "hostage crisis" ended in 1980.

>Face the facts, he ISN'T welcome in the U.S., Great Britain or

Well I hope the 9th September Fund for the victims of the attacks will now return the donations he made so that he can use them in Kosovo and Africa for famine relief.

As for not being welcome in Great Britain, he is a prominent member of a muslim community in North London where he teaches in the Islamic school he co-founded. A school which has the same government funding as schools run by the Catholics, Chruch of England and Jews.

As I said, never let the facts get in the way.

I believe that you are advocating terrorist attacks on the President of the United States - inciting people by saying that it would be a good thing if a terrorist attack occurred in Washington DC becuase it would harm the President.

And you belong in some other country than America. You obviously are not comfortable in a country where freedom of speech prevails, so why don't you get your wrinkled old behind on the next plane to North Korea? It's a police state, and that's clearly the atmosphere you like. Bon Voyage!

Southy, you may not be aware that during the first Adams administration Congress passed the infamous Alien and Sedition Acts, which made it a federal crime to speak "seditiously." The most celebrated victim of this statute, which was soon after struck down as unconstitutional, was a man who, upon hearing a cannon salute fired in honor of President Adams, was overheard to say that he wished the cannonballs had hit Adams in the posterior. He was actually arrested and imprisoned for saying this, can you believe it? Doug would obviously be a lot more comfortable living in that era than in this one! If only we had a time machine -- preferably a one-way machine, of course!

No, I like it here just fine. Under well-settled First Amendment law, one does not have the right to incite violence or terrorism, nor does one have the right to advocate the assisination of the Presdient. SouthBchBttm cunt did both.

Like most of his ilk, Dougie loves freedom of speech for himself, but not for anyone else. I think North Korea would a wonderful place for Dougie to spend his declining years, spinning panegyrics to the Great Leader and the Dear Leader and oppressing anyone who dares to disagree. . .

RE: Kick Doug Out of America

Every time Doug and Hawk spout their cryptofacist bullshit, I realize just how thoroughly depraved some of these

neo-nazis really are.

Doug, do you think the Iraqi prisoners saw their American captors and torturers as liberators? Of course you do. That's how totally syphilitic your pea brain has become these days.

The key problem with both of these moral degenerates is that they only think American lives are of any value. They could really care less how many Iraqis die in this illegal war. It's the same, sad, racist, bigoted mentality that led to the imperialist slaughter of Native Americans in this country.

They love spewing their poison here, because they don't have to don their Klan robes or raise the swastika to do it. VaHawk has essentially labeled all Muslims as terror threats, and Dougie has attacked all persons in Iraq who oppose the illegal occupation of their country as terrorists who cut off the heads of their opponents. No matter how sophisticated they would like you to believe they are, they're just a couple of rednecks who revel in their bigotry.

And who was right about the Rather documents? I have yet to see anyone come forward with evidence proving the accusations that they were forged. So far no one has even found out who it was that really provided them, much less where that person got them or how. Do you know?

And what exactly are you "waiting" for in regard to Southy? I'd be amazed if you could bestir yourself sufficiently to provide us with case law showing that his comments are indeed within the exception you refer to, and if you don't do it then who do you suppose will? Alan Dershowitz?

So much for Daddy's praise of you. You, Doug, are simply a puppet of the Repiglicans, much like ol Zig Zag Zell.

You fail to understand a very basic concept: the terrorists and the Iraqi rebels are two separate groups. The Iraqi rebels are fighting what they feel is an unjust occupation of their land. The terrorists, led by Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, are simply trying to further their own agenda and using Bush's failed war to do so. Remember that these terrorists would not even be in Iraq had George Bush not brought them there through his ill advised invasion of iraq to find Saddam's non existent WMD that he already disarmed himself of in accordance witt the UN resolutions that Shrubya said he was enforcing. It was all just so much Bushit.

It is al-Zarqawi who has been beheading the hostages, not the Iraqi rebels.

Bush has had several opportunities in the past to take out al-Zarqawi, but he declined to do so for fear that it would take the focus off of Saddam, in much the same way he has allowed Osama bin laden to roam free.

George W. Bush had been a miserable failure has president. He has made this country and the world more in danger of terrorism than ever before. It's sad to see morally depraved whackos like you support such a waste of space. It's even more sad that you do it with such passion. We can't afford 4 more years of this.

Waiting for VaHawk's comments on latest developments:

==Jack Straw, the foreign secretary earlier intervened in the row by telling Colin Powell, the US secretary of state, that the decision to ban Mr Islam "should not have been taken".

It emerged yesterday that on his last visit in May he met with officials of the White House's office of faith-based and community initiatives to discuss philanthropic work. The US department of homeland security said last night that fresh intelligence had been gathered since then.

Mr Islam, 56, said the foreign secretary's intervention had been "very kind", adding that he was shocked to have been denied entry to the US on security grounds.==
