The Westboro Baptist Church leaders (known for picketing the funeral of Matthew Shepard, the young college student brutally murdered in Wyoming in 1998) have released two statements regarding the tsunamis which hit Southeast Asia earlier in the week.

In the first message they thank God that 3,000 Americans lost their lives. Drawing a parallel to the 9-11 deaths, they state:

"Thank God for Tsunami. Thank God for 3,000 dead Americans! ...Even so, God sent Tsunami last week to execute vengeance upon another 3,000 carcasses swallowed up in Asians jungles."

In their second message they turn on Sweden by stating:

"Thank God for Tsunami & 2,000 dead Swedes!!! How many tsunami-dead Swedes are fags & dykes?"

These hateful people are not sane, by most definitions. It is not fair even to "the far right" to associate them with this tiny, demented cult. Just because there's a website doesn't mean there are more than a handful of them. Rather than spreading their filth by posting it as horrible examples, we'd be better off just ignoring it.

Unfortunately, there are more than just a handful of them. I received an e-mail from another poster who claimed there is also a congregation in Ottawa, Canada. They host an anti-American website that I just visited to confirm the info.

I'd normally agree with you. But this group if so vile and hateful that I feel they can't be ignored. They don't just run a website. They actively protest and picket (like they did at Shepard's funeral). And, they're on their way again to Wyoming to do another protest in January. Multiple sites in NY, DC, and PA are also slated for their protests in January and February.

I can't ignore a group that is actively pursing death and destruction of gays. IMHO they are another flavor of terrorism.

This "church" is unrelated to any other known denomination, in spite of its deceptive name. It really amounts to a small cult centered around the family of its sociopathic founder, Fred Phelps. He's been very clever and devious, though. He sent most of his far too numerous progeny to law school. Now they spend their time filing suits and evidently that's how they finance their activities. I guess it makes a good family living. They get to travel around to much more interesting places than Topeka to conduct their crazed demonstrations, gain lots of publicity, and generally give a black eye to Christianity, even though there's nothing remotely Christian about this crowd.

It's probably cold comfort to know that there are similarly psychotic Jewish cults (they're small, but loud, too), not to mention al-Qaeda and the Taliban, which are the Muslim world's equivalent of the Phelps cult. x(

Yes, I know. Over the years, I've been sued twice by Phelps relatives on various matters. I've won, both times. The hassle factor is enormous, as they play to settle not win. Someone inclined to dig in their heels and stand on principle does not fit their model. Last I was in Topeka, the "church" was a cluster of mobile homes where the various extended elements of the clan lived. One does wonder if their church has tax-exempt status? If so, given the amount of political lobbying they appear to do, one wonders if their tax-exempt status might be questioned somehow? The consequences of tax-exempt status being revoked could be devastating.

Fortunately, none of these cults know my address to send over process servers...

I think al-Qaeda may actually be harder core than the Phelps bunch. So far, Phelps & company have flown zero airplanes in to buildings. No suicide bombers have yet emerged from this band. In the past, I have wondered if Phelps is really crazy like a fox and is just in it for the money. They do appear to have some funds at their disposal. An awful lot of people end up paying them off.

I have read a news article recently that indicated that the internet is chock-full of "Divine Retribution" interpretations of the Indian Ocean tsunamis. None of them amount to more than a pile of dog poo.

The only reasonable theological rational I might believe is this: If one accepts incarnation onto this Earth, one must accept the possible consequences of life on a moving, shaking planet.

It's nothing more than a pseudo-

spiritual anodyne, I know. But it places no blame anywhere, and when "bad things happen to good people", this is an important thing to keep in mind.

The Other Cheek

In discussions of crazies with divine-retribution portfolios, we should not forget the good reverends Robertson and Fallwell, who stated their belief that the hurricanes in Florida and even 9/11 were part of a divine retribution exacted against this country for our wicked ways.

Yeah - I think that's finally something we can ALL agree on. It sure is sick and evil to celebrate the deaths of other human beings as though it's deserved and even intended by some powerful universal force simply because those individuals disagree with you politically.

Why, that would be like hearing about the premature and horrifying death of a 43-year-old fomer football player with a wife and children and celebrating it as being "karmic-retribution" all because he had different views about homosexuality.

Oh, wait - that is what the liberals here did. They celebrated Reggie White's death and even claimed that it was caused by "karma" - all because he had different views on gay issues than they did.

But at the same time, they act like Fred Phelps is the Devil Incarnate because he celebrated the death of Swedish citizens and said it was divine retribution all because they had different views than he did on homosexuality.

I'm oh-so-sure that there are huge differences between these two reactions even though they seem so completely identical in every way.

There have to be huge differences, even if they can't be seen. I mean, everyone knows that liberals are constitutionally incapable of hypocrisy or hatred along the lines of Fred Phelps. That just goes without saying.

Don't look now, Dougie, but, as usual, your ass is showing. The participants at the message center have to look at it every time you resort to your incessant binary way of viewing the world. You lump all liberals into one pot, painting them all with the same brush. There's no doubt about my politics here, but you'll find my name missing from the Reggie White thread. I wasn't interested enough in that thread to say anything there, so I didn't. Personally, I took no pleasure in his death, even though I think he was an obnoxious, self-important fuck (something like you).

Actually, I think you and Fred have much more in common. You both share a bifurcated worldview, dividing everything between good and evil, with no shades of gray. It's not hard to see why you've so quickly come to the defense of these bigots....you're just like them.

Your tirades against liberalism grow increasingly boring, especially since you lack the sophistication to know that liberalism, like conservatism, is not monolithic. Both come in a variety of shades.

Obviously, you're just too ignorant to recognize that fact.

I didn't say all liberals did this. I said liberals here did it. And they did.

Your silence speaks volumes. You're constantly prattling on about every conservative sin. But your ideological comrades engage in the disgusting spectacle of celebrating the tragically premature death of another human being on the ground that he had different political views, and you say nothing to condemn that. I guess bad acts are only worthy of note (and screetching) when done by conservatives, but not by liberals.

The next time I celebrate the death of human beings because they have different political views than I do, you'll have a point. The thing is, you'll never have a point. Unlike Fred Phelps and your ideological comrades here, I don't engage in such revolting behavior.

Dougie:

Please stop lying. You know you will be celebrating the death of Osama bin Laden when it occurs, so don't try to feed us more of your bullshit. Unless you can say that you don't wish for anyone to die, regardless of their political perspectives, then you are a liar!
