Karma can be a bitch, huh?

For those who don't remember, here are some of his pronouncements...

Packers' White discusses 'sin' homosexuality in speech

CBS SportsLine wire reports

March 25, 1998

MADISON, Wis. -- Most people invited to speak to the Wisconsin Legislature give five minutes of pleasantries, get a few moments of applause and go home.

Lawmakers weren't expecting the earful Reggie White had in store for them Wednesday.

They thought the Green Bay Packers star and ordained minister came to talk about his community work and a recent trip to Israel.

White did, but his nearly hour-long speech also included remarks on homosexuality, race and slavery that turned the Assembly's applause to stunned silence.

White said the United States has gotten away from God, in part by allowing homosexuality to "run rampant."

HOMOSEXUALITY IS a sin, and the plight of gays and lesbians should not be compared to that of blacks, White told lawmakers.

"Homosexuality is a decision, it's not a race," White said. "People from all different ethnic backgrounds live in this lifestyle. But people from all different ethnic backgrounds also are liars and cheaters and malicious and back-stabbing."

White said he has thought about why God created different races. Each race has certain gifts, he said.

Blacks are gifted at worship and celebration, White said.

"If you go to a black church, you see people jumping up and down because they really get into it," he said.

Whites are good at organization, White said.

"You guys do a good job of building businesses and things of that nature, and you know how to tap into money," he said.

"Hispanics were gifted in family structure, and you can see a Hispanic person, and they can put 20, 30 people in one home."

THE JAPANESE AND other Asians are inventive, and "can turn a television into a watch," White said. Indians are gifted in spirituality, he said.

"When you put all of that together, guess what it makes: It forms a complete image of God," White said.

White said later that his comments were about coming together as a society and were not meant to stereotype the races.

"This is the first time I've been at a loss for words," Assembly Minority Leader Walter Kunicki, D-Milwaukee, said after White's speech. "You can still tell from the tension in the room that much of this was offensive."

White was invited to speak by Assembly Speaker Scott Jensen, R-Waukesha.

Jensen called White's comments about homosexuality "disappointing." Homosexuality is a genetic predisposition, not a decision, Jensen said.

Rep. Tammy Baldwin, a Madison Democrat and the Legislature's only openly gay member, said she disagreed with White's remarks, but as a lawmaker believed in putting aside personal feelings to promote a "healthy debate."

CBS SPORTS spokeswoman Leslie Ann Wade declined to comment on White's speech or whether his remarks would affect his chances for a studio analyst's job. White has auditioned for a commentating job at the network.

CBS fired football analyst Jimmy "The Greek" Snyder in 1988 for saying that blacks had been "bred from slavery" to make better athletes.

"CBS doesn't accept bias from any of its announcers of any kind," Wade said.

White declined to comment on whether he will leave the Packers before the 1998 season.

Karma

The autoposy on him so far reveals he apparently died of a massive coronary brought on by an inability to breathe. I would not wish this type of death on anyone.

I think White, who was an ordained minister who often preached in inner city, urban areas, is emblemic of many, particularly Baptist and other religous blacks, who do not open themselves to a more diverse population and, given historical prejudice againsts black, is more remarkable in its irony than anything else.

This is akin to the pastor who recently used Martin Luther King to promote an anti-gay marriage political agenda. What White said is fundamentally no different than what John Paul has stated, repeatedly, orally and in writing, so I think enlightenment or further contemplation is more the karmic act, than the death of a 43 year old man.

I'm sad that Reggie White died, especially at such a relatively young age. My heart goes out to his family.

I, however, didn't know that Reggie White was so outspoken against GLBT people. I guess thats to be expected, but statements like his do serious harm to people who are struggling to come to terms with their sexuality, and then just trying to live in this world. Since he decided that equating gay rights with the civil rights movement was wrong, he decided to close his eyes to the fact that GLBT are black, white, asian, latin, native american, and so on. I doubt that he realized the extent of the harm that he was doing. I respect the man. He did some positive things. But for the harm that he helped to perpetuate I have to say shame on Reggie White.

>How fucking SICK can you possibly get, than to celebrate the

>death of another human being with the old "ding dong the witch

>is dead" song? Let me know when you expire as I would like to

>do the same for you! :(

Can we assume, hawk, that you'll be singing Amazing Grace at the funerals of Saddam, Osama, Kim Jong-Il and President Bush?

>Poor hawkie. Can't stand when someone gets the best of him.

You would have a point, if I thought that you got the best of me! But you didn't, and if you THINK that you did, then point out how you did.

You make an assinenly stupid comparison between a benevolent, Christian minister like Reggie White who NEVER advocated violence and hatred towards gays, and intolerant, murdering despots! Do you have any idea, of how stupid you come across, when you let your anti-Bush intolerance and hatred rule your reasoning? Nah, I didn't think so! :(

We'll let Reggie's words speak for themselves:

Gays are like liars and cheaters

" 'Homosexuality is a decision, it's not a race,' White said. 'People from all different ethnic backgrounds live in this lifestyle. But people from all different ethnic backgrounds also are liars and cheaters and malicious and back-stabbing.' " - Reggie White, Associated Press, March 25, 1998.

Gays hurt children, kill our people

"White said he stands by his remarks regarding gays. `I am going to speak the truth and I am going to speak out against things that's hurting our children, that's killing off our people,' White said. `If people think that's a contradiction and that's hate, they need to take them up with God, not with Reggie White.'" Associated Press, April 26, 1998, quoting White's 20/20 interview.

Gays are like backstabbers and malicious people

PEGGY WEHMEYER of ABC's 20/20: "Just last week, Reggie White and his wife, Sara, met us for an exclusive interview. White told us he was sorry if he offended anyone, but he wasn’t backing down one inch. (on camera) Are you saying there that homosexuals are like liars, cheaters, backstabbers and malicious people?"

REGGIE WHITE "Yes." - ABC's 20/20, April 27, 1998.

"Sodomite community"

"Reggie White's wife said CBS was `'too scared'' to hire her husband as a football commentator because of his controversial speech before the Wisconsin State Assembly. White, the Green Bay Packers defensive lineman who retired and unretired last week, used ethnic stereotypes and called homosexuality `'one of the biggest sins'' in the Bible in his remarks last month. 'They were too scared of the Sodomite community is what they said,' Sara White told ABC's '20/20'." - ASSOCIATED PRESS, April 26, 1998

Gays responsible for STDs

"America is not big enough to shake her fist in the face of a holy God and get away with it, and as I read this I want to explain something. I'm going to read this and then I want to explain something. As America has permitted homosexuality to establish itself as an alternate lifestyle, it is also reeling from the frightening spread of sexually transmitted disease. Sin begets its own consequence, both on individuals and nations."- Remarks by Reggie White to the Wisconsin Assembly, March 25, 1998.

Homosexuality one of the biggest sins

"Let me explain something when I'm talking about sin, and I'm talking about all sin. One of the biggest ones that has been talked about that has really become a debate in America is homosexuality."- Remarks by Reggie White to the Wisconsin Assembly, March 25, 1998.

Gays have problems

"Now, I believe that one of the reasons that Jesus was accused of being a homosexual is because he spent time with homosexuals. I've often had people ask me, would you allow a homosexual to be your friend. Yes, I will. And the reason I will is because I know that that person has problems, and if I can minister to those problems, I will."- Remarks by Reggie White to the Wisconsin Assembly, March 25, 1998.

Being gay compared to lying, gays hurt nation

"But the Bible strictly speaks against it, and because the Bible speaks against it, we allow rampant sin including homosexuality and lying, and to me lying is just as bad as homosexuality, we've allowed this sin to run rampant in our nation, and because it has run rampant in our nation, our nation is in the condition it is today."- Remarks by Reggie White to the Wisconsin Assembly, March 25, 1998.

Offended that gays say deserve rights

"Sometimes when people talk about this sin they've been accused of being racist. I'm offended that homosexuals will say that homosexuals deserve rights. Any man in America deserves rights, but homosexuals are trying to compare their plight with the plight of black men or black people. In the process of history, homosexuals have never been castrated, millions of them never died. Homosexuality is a decision. It's not a race."- Remarks by Reggie White to the Wisconsin Assembly, March 25, 1998.

>We'll let Reggie's words speak for themselves:

The very definition of a morally depraved individual is someone who equates - and is incapable of distinguishing between - a person who disagrees with them politically and a person who commits genoicde and mass murder.

Osama bin Laden = Adolph Hitler = Saddam Hussein = Reggie White.

Only a truly sick and demented mind would posit that equivalence.

Then again, these are the same people who, with one breath, wish death upon their political opponents and celebrate their premature demise, and then with the next breath, accuse anyone who disagrees with them of being "Hitleresque" - and they do this without even recognizing the irony.

The cold hard fact is, some people are "hitleresque"......as a matter of fact, you come to mind.

Words Speaking For Themselves

Unfortunately, the problem with what Reggie White said or believed is not the only issue. The original post took pleasure in his death because of what he said. That is different than, for example, taking pleasure in the death of say Osama Bin Laden or Hitler for what they did.

The Los Angeles Times reported a few days ago on two teenagers, adopted by a gay couple in Orange County, being under attack (verbally, so far) from the parents of other students because the gay parents enrolled them in a Catholic school run by the diocese. Thus far, the diocese has taken the position that the children should not be "punished" for any "sins" of their fathers, and in fact both men are listed as simply "father" of each child in the family director of the school. Because the Vatican has repeatedly made comments (albeit somewhat milder) akin to Mr. Whites, the parents in opposition believe the school cannot teach good Catholic dogma if it allows the kids to stay in school.

This type of issue is a larger problem, much more worthy of discussion than glee in the passing (or taking) of any human life, including people who many may feel are worthy of death.

Finally, BON, you of all people should be aware that Dougie is simply going to make absurd, out of context contributions and you should not perpetuate such posts but engaging him in any dialogue about them.
