Swedish pastor sentenced to one month's jail for offending homosexuals

Stockholm (ENI). A Swedish court has sentenced a pastor belonging to the Pentecostal movement in Sweden, Ake Green, to a month in prison, under a law against incitement, after he was found guilty of having offended homosexuals in a sermon. Soren Andersson, the president of the Swedish federation for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights (RFSL), said on hearing the sentence that religious freedom could never be used as a reason to offend people. "Therefore," he told journalists, "I cannot regard the sentence as an act of interference with freedom of religion." Here we go again, with Doug trying to mislead the flock. Note his title for this thread, "Anti-gay Thought Crimes". In typical Doug fashion, he would have you believe that this homophobic pastor was sentenced for his thoughts, rather than his words. Most thinking folks know that you can get in trouble for things you say (for instance, making a verbal threat against the president).

For the record, I actually agree with Doug that such a legal response to this sermon is extreme; I just wonder why he felt it necessary to mislead people by the title of the thread.

The prosecution of the "minister," who also claimed that homosexuality causes AIDS and pedophilia, is the first of its kind under a new hate law enacted by the Swedish government. I wasn't aware that only gay people were allowed to vote in Sweden, but since Doug says that the action was caused by "gay people," I guess he must know. After all, Sweden is just a hop, skip and jump from Bulgaria.

Next thing you know, colored people is gonna be causin' the American government to put cross burners in prison.

Phelps arrested for slurs By ROGER MYERS

Fred Phelps Sr. was arrested Wednesday and charged with one count of disorderly conduct for allegedly hurling "fighting words" at a Topeka attorney as the lawyer headed into a luncheon for First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton here last March.

The strident anti-gay demonstrator posted a $250 signature bond, no cash required, at the Shawnee County Jail about 1 p.m. Wednesday on the misdemeanor criminal charge and was released.

The offense is punishable by up to 30 days in jail and a maximum fine of $500.

The charge was filed by Shawnee County District Attorney Joan Hamilton on the complaint of Jerry R. Palmer. The complaint charged Phelps used offensive, obscene and abusive language tending to arouse alarm, anger or resentment in others.

The charge stemmed from an incident about noon March 27 when Clinton, the wife of then-presidential candidate Bill Clinton, appeared at a fund-raising luncheon in the Jayhawk Tower at S.W. 7th and Jackson. She was in Topeka campaigning for her husband ahead of the April 7 Kansas presidential primary election.

Phelps said of his group's picketing at the luncheon: "We had our signs out there in good order saying Bill Loves Fags and Hillary Loves Fags, the same ones we still carry."

Midafternoon Wednesday, Phelps denounced Hamilton and Palmer in telefaxes sent to Topeka media outlets. He followed the written blasts with a news conference at 4:30 p.m. at S.W. 10th and Topeka.

He called the disorderly conduct charge part of Hamilton's vendetta against him and said she used Palmer as a stooge to have Phelps arrested on a phony charge.

Phelps claimed Hamilton filed the charges "in line with her illegal campaign promises to the militant homosexuals: 'Once I get in office I'll get rid of those Phelpses;' and, 'You do not have to worry about Fred Phelps and his picketers if I am elected district attorney.'"

Still, Phelps said he was delighted Hamilton filed the charge against him.

"Almost every night I get down on my knees and ask the good Lord to please let someone get me into a court situation," he said. "Then I get subpoena powers and I get to cross-examine witnesses. This is finger-licking good stuff."

Phelps is a disbarred attorney. However, he has the right to represent himself in court.

In her affidavit attached to the criminal complaint, Hamilton alleged Phelps called Palmer a sodomite.

"He continued to address Mr. Palmer by saying directly to him, 'fat, ugly, sodomite.'

"Mr. Palmer stated that these were 'fighting words' for him because he knows that the suspect uses these words to designate homosexuals. He also knows that the suspect understands the meaning of the words and intended to outrage and disturb him."

Hamilton said Palmer denied he is a homosexual in the affidavit Palmer submitted to former assistant district attorney Bill Ossmann, requesting that Ossmann file charges againstPhelps. Hamilton said Palmer originally asked Ossmann to file charges against Phelps on March 31, but Ossmann took no action. She said Palmer asked her to reactivate his complaint after she took office in January.

Speaking of the March 27 incident, Phelps said Palmer "was across the street north from us. He came over to us yelling, 'Get those godmn' and 'What the hell.' And I said, 'Jerry, you must be a sodomite, talking that way.'

"And he said, 'You calling me a sodomite? You calling me a sodomite?,' and he went over and got a witness and said, 'What did you call me?,' and I said, 'I'll add a couple of adjectives, Jerry fat, ugly sodomite.'

Phelps, who said he has never had a criminal charge filed against him in his 63 years, asserted that Hamilton filed the disorderly conduct charge against him partly because his daughter, Abbigail, had lodged allegations against Hamilton with the disciplinary administrator.

Hamilton said Abbigail Phelps charged in her complaint that the Shawnee County district attorney abused her prosecutorial authority against some defendants. The new district attorney denied any retaliation was involved.

The disciplinary administrator investigates complaints against lawyers in Kansas.

Hamilton also said she was notified Monday by Bruce Miller, the disciplinary administrator, that Abbigail Phelps' complaint had been dismissed without any action taken. However, Abbigail Phelps has filed new allegations against Hamilton, also charging that the district attorney had promised in her campaign to silence Phelps and his anti-gay picketers.

One would CERTAINLY hope so, as this is America, the LAND of free speech!!! As such, that FREE speech is allowed and defended by the very 1st amendment to the Constitution!!!

Just mo, but, this pastor was DEFINITELY sentenced for His innate right to EXPRESS his OPINION, which is a BASIC human right, the same basic HUMAN rights that all gays DEMAND!

IMHO, anyone who would condone this man to imprisonment for exercising his right to express his opinon, while advocating the free expression of Queers to do the same, is a REAL FUCKING HYPOCRITE!
