okay, this posting is purely to give things a somewhat fair, balanced, and intellectually honest tenor here--a counterweight to the more typical rabid liberal denunciations of anything or anyone conservative.

even the most vehemently anti-scalia among you should join me in applauding antonin scalia's decision to recuse himself from the Pledge of Allegiance case, right? the recusal was the just, right, moral thing to do, although there was nothing to force him to stay out of the case. whether you detest the man or not, surely you can admit that he sticks to his principles (such as they are), and at least THIS time, did the right thing.

(just as an aside: i often find myself agreeing with scalia on actual decisions, but usually not agreeing with his reasoning--which has a tendency to be rather repugnant on social issues.)

I'll agree. Scalia has come off as somewhat mentally unbalanced lately, but perhaps he's back on his meds, which would explain this rational and laudable decision. Of course, there is always the possibility of a 4-4 tie in the decision and perhaps that was what he was hoping for.

exactly, rick.

and that would presumably be the last thing scalia would want to happen. that's why i felt the need to make the post in the first place. sometimes you have to admit that the people with whom you disagree aren't evil, vile people, but rather simply people who have different views. BoN would simply rather make personal attacks and cast aspersions about medications.

We do not know why he recused himself, so there is no way to know if it was just or moral, etc. The fact that you disagree with him may make you glad he recused himself, but it gives you no basis for saying that it was the right thing to do. Justice Scalia believes in Democracy, that is, that the Constitution was adopted democraticaly and if it is to be amended, it should be amended democraticaly, and not by autocratic means. The Supreme Court was not intended to be our dictator, benevolent or otherwise. Ours should be a government of laws, and not of men. The whole purpose of the Constitution and Democracy is to protect us from the arbitraty decisions of Kings or Dictators. Alas, the liberals are so result-oriented that they want the court to impose the liberal agenda by dictatorial decree, without regard to the Constitution or the democratic process, and will vilify any Justice who believes in following word and intent of the Constitution.

RE: praise for taylor

When I saw that "taylorky" had written a post regarding Justice Antonin Scalia, I literally rushed to read it, knowing that there are few things which could be more entertaining than THAT. I love all "taylor" posts, but the ones where he tries to talk about political or legal issues are my absolute favorite. And this one did not disappoint - what a gem!

Hooboy should really charge a fee for access to taylor posts. You can't find anything else like them on the Internet. The combination of abject stupidity, illiterate use of cliches, and strident socialistic dogma, expressed exclusively in ellipsed phrases and playground taunts, makes for an outstandingly entertaining combination.

It's like watching Charlie Brown - or a kid with Down's Syndrome - trying to kick a football through the goal posts. As pathetic as it is, one never tires of watching it, and strangely, it becomes more and more humorous the more times one sees it.

Please, taylor - stay around and keep it up!!

Here we see the true colors of Doug69.......taking delight in ridiculing Down's Syndrome children. Well, at least for me, no big surprise.

I'd much rather read what Taylor has to say, than the perverse rantings of a miscreant like Doug69. Doug, you are truly the scum of the earth.

Right. Just like you did to me. And speaking of evil, vile people, how's law school going?
